Vivaldi - Sonata II, RV 41, Transcribed for Double Bass (Urtext)
Antonio Vivaldi - Cello Sonata No.2, RV 41, Urtext Edition. Full score (7 pages) and solo parts in orchestra and solo tuning (12 pages). Available as a PDF download.
The Vivaldi cello sonatas are some of the most popular transcriptions for double bassists. These transcriptions have been prepared from both the manuscript (Bibliothèque Nationale, Départment de la Musique, MS Vm7 6310) and first edition in Paris (Le Clerc le Cadet, 1740) of Vivaldi’s 6 Cello Sonatas, Op.14 (RV 47, RV 41, RV 43, RV 45, RV 40, and RV 46). Unlike previous transcriptions for the double bass, the original articulation markings have been preserved in this edition from the two earliest sources.
Each sonata in this set contains a full score with the continuo part and three solo parts for the double bass:
A solo part to be played an octave lower than the cello
A solo part to be played at cello pitch in orchestra tuning
A solo part to be played at cello pitch in solo tuning
Some players will find that certain sonatas work better in different tunings, but all work very well played one octave lower than the cello. Notes that appear below a low E in the lower transcription have been modified to make it playable by all bassists.
