Schubert - String Quintet in C major, D.956, Transcribed for Double Bass - Orchestra Tuning
Franz Schubert - String Quintet in C major, D.956, Op. Post. 163, cello II part transcribed for double bass in orchestra tuning (GDAE). 26 pages, available as a PDF download.
Schubert’s String Quintet in C major, D.956 is now available in a transcription of the second cello part for double bass. Originally for 2 violins, viola, and 2 cellos, the change from cello to double bass adds another dimension of sound to the ensemble and gives double bassists a chance to perform this masterpiece. A number of double bassists have played this piece, with Gary Karr most likely being the first, and there are a few ways the transcription could be realized with different tunings and octaves. After looking through the score, I decided to keep the original cello octaves since the piece is playable at pitch, true to the original part, and offer three different versions: orchestra tuning, solo tuning, and high C tuning (cGDA), so that players can pick the tuning that best matches their needs.
