Hoffmeister - Quartet No.1 for Double Bass and Strings (Urtext), Score and Parts
Hoffmeister - Quartet No.1 for Double Bass, Violin, Viola, and Cello. Urtext edition with full score and parts.
These four quartets written by Hoffmeister feature the double bass in the role of the first violin part. The quartets have been prepared from manuscripts held in Vienna (Quartet No.1, Ms. IX 6395, from the Archiv der Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde, Wien) and Schwerin (Quartets No.2-4, Mus 2857, 2858, and 2859, from the Landesbibliothek Mecklenburg-Vorpommern). While previous editions have tried to fit the double bass in these quartets to an instrument tuned in fourths, this edition is true to the original manuscripts.
Like Hoffmeister’s three double bass concertos, they were written to exploit the possibilities of Viennese tuning on the bass, which explains why they’re all written in D major. These pieces work well on both chamber music programs and recitals and showcase the possibilities of the double bass replacing the first violin part in a string quartet.
